Chapter 9
Amelia
Stéphanie must have heard my exclamation of dismay when Damien returned not only with the horses, but with his friends from the lodge in tow. âOh, Léandreâs not all that bad,â Stéphanie said. âI know he comes across like a jerk, but heâs okay once you know how to take him. Heâs been a loyal friend to Damien, and sometimes heâs a lot of fun.â
Emerson made a noise in his throat. âHe rides like he thinks heâs a prince, or something.â
Stéphanie choked on the soda she was drinking. âWell, he came into a big estate very young, but he doesnât have much to do with running it. I think thatâs part of his problem. He just has a lot of growing up to do.â
âSounds like too much money and too much time,â Harper murmured, and I nodded in agreement. People could say what they wanted about my grandmotherâs stinginess, but at least sheâd forced me to take responsibility.
âHis mother has control of his funds,â Stéphanie added. âIf she cut him off, maybe heâd change. Look, letâs talk about it later. I donât want Damien to hear us. He knows Léandre has problems, but they go way back.â
Damien came to a stop and dismounted. âLook who I ran into.â His smile didnât reach his eyes, and I felt better knowing he wasnât happy about the intrusion either. He made the introductions quickly before asking me, âCan I help you up?â
I didnât need help, but I wasnât going to turn him down, not with that pipsqueak staring at him with her vulture eyes. âYour mother lent me some old boots because I left my shoes near the back door last night and the sprinklers got them.â
He grimaced as he glanced down. âShe lent you those old things?â
âCome on. Theyâre perfect. And very comfortable.â
As if unable to resist, he leaned forward and gave me a quick kiss. Behind him, I caught a glimpse of Bridgit glaring at me. Okay. That was one girl I wasnât going to win over.
After boosting me onto my horse, Damien went to help Stéphanie tuck our lunches into their saddlebags. They ended up going inside for additional food because of Léandre and Bridgit, so while we waited for them, Harper moved her horse closer to mine.
âMmm, that kiss . . . looks like things are going well between you and Damien. I saw the palace you two were building last night. You must have been up for hours.â
âI do like himâa lot,â I admitted. âI never imagined when we came here that Iâd meet someone like Damien. It seems like Iâve known him for months, but itâs only been, what, four daysâand you canât really count our first meeting.â
Harper smirked. âHe was half naked. We can definitely count it. The question is, how does he make you feel?â
âWell, sometimes itâs as comfortable as being with Emerson, butââI heaved sighââthereâs so much more to it.â
Like how I could drown in his kisses and never come up for air. Like how I wanted to forget my upcoming job or going back to America.
